Former Riverside County Superintendents Dr. David Long and Kenneth Young Endorse Oliver Unaka for Board of Education

RIVERSIDE, CA — In a powerful demonstration of institutional and industry support, the Oliver Unaka campaign for Riverside County Board of Education (Trustee Area 1) today announced the dual endorsement of two of the county’s most respected former educational leaders: Dr. David Long and Kenneth M. Young.

The backing of two former Riverside County Superintendents of Schools—who collectively led the Riverside County Office of Education (RCOE) for nearly two decades—signifies a high-level consensus that Unaka possesses the experience and vision necessary to guide the county’s educational future.

"Oliver Unaka is the leader Riverside County needs right now," said Dr. David Long, who served as County Superintendent before being appointed as California’s Secretary of Education. "His deep understanding of how to communicate complex educational issues to the public, combined with his unwavering focus on student achievement, makes him the ideal candidate to serve on the Board."

Kenneth M. Young, who succeeded Dr. Long and served as County Superintendent for nine years, echoed those sentiments:

"Oliver’s commitment to our schools and his ability to build bridges between administrators, parents, and community stakeholders is second to none. He isn't just a candidate, he is a dedicated public servant who understands the responsibilities of our local education agencies, and how educators must deliver results to prepare this generation for future success."

The endorsements highlight Unaka’s "Unified Students First" platform, which emphasizes:

  • Continuity of Excellence: Building on the foundations laid by previous administrations to improve graduation rates and college readiness.

  • Fiscal Oversight: Proactively advocating to strengthen countywide professional development (PD) for public and charter CFOs to support greater financial accountability of taxpayer dollars amid statewide declining enrollments

  • Innovative Partnerships: Expanding vocational and technical training through collaborations with regional business and industry leaders.

"Receiving the support of Dr. Long and Ken Young is a profound honor," said Oliver Unaka. "These are leaders who navigated the complexities of our 4th largest county school system with integrity. Their mentorship and belief in my candidacy reinforce my commitment to ensuring every student in Riverside County has the tools to succeed in the 21st-century economy."

As the June 2, 2026, primary draws closer, the Unaka campaign continues to build a broad coalition of educators, community advocates, and former administrators dedicated to a "Unified Students First" approach to county governance.
